Year 5 student Tom Kelly is celebrating after his outstanding success at The Abu Dhabi Piano Competition recently.
The talented pianist was the joint winner of the Under 10 category of the competition, which was held on 3 December 2015.
It was Tom's first competition since he began three years ago.
"I really didn't expect to win," Tom said.
"I'm really proud of myself."
Tom, 9, played six pieces from memory -- three classical and three jazz/blues. His favourite was A Wise Bud by British jazz pianist Jason Rebello for its delicate, cheerful melody and fast pace.
The other pieces were: Two part Invention in D Minor by Bach; Sonatina in C Major OP.168 No. 3 first and second movements by Diabelli; Op 100 No 12 (The Farewell) by Burgmuller; It ain't necessarily so by George Gershwin; and Blues by Gerard Hengeveld.
Tom, who also plays trumpet, is in the academic programme at Qatar Music Academy and his teacher is Dr. Ozgur Mert Esen.
During the trip Tom also attended a master class with Russian pianist Dr. Yuri Didenko.
